New Flu season said, Hello!

According to Reuter, the flu season has started in US earlier than usual. Some hospitals, like Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, are running out of flu testing supplies, and 30-40 people coming to Emergency room with flu like symptoms daily. “The emergency rooms are quite full and it`s clear that the annual flu epidemic is in full swing," said Dr. Brian Currie, medical director for research at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports that the proportion of people visiting their doctor for a flu-like illness has climbed from 2.8 percent to 5.6 percent in the last four weeks. That compares with 2.2 percent during last year`s mild flu season and a peak of 7.7 percent during the 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak.

The definition of pandemic by health officials is the following: “A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. It is determined by how the disease spreads….” Well, according to CDC influenza report - all states have flu “widespread” with exception of 6 western states and Washington DC (perhaps DC is lucky because even flu virus can`t tolerate toxic Washington environment). Flu caused by virus type A (H3) – 6215 cases, type B -2124 cases, “Swine flu” (H1N1 of 2009) – 110, and other subtypes - 3258 cases. Keep in mind that these numbers are two weeks old, and situation is not coming better.

It seems that flu pandemic has a worldwide swing. Israel`s media reported local H1N1 outbreak with 3 lethal cases, and 14 are in critical conditions recently. One of the victims a 15-year old boy appeared healthy until succumbed to the disease within a single day. His death has sparked a panic in Tel-Aviv. Patients arrived in droves in “Ichilov” Hospital late Tuesday night, carrying children with flu symptoms, and many found themselves waiting for a spare bed for up to four hours. Overall, 8000 people have symptoms of flu. Also about 365 people have been sickened in Palestinian territories, and fourteen people died from the H1N1 flu virus, as media reported.

The symptoms of H1N1 flu in people are similar to seasonal flu and include: ● Fever ● Cough ● Sore Throat ● Runny Nose ● Body Aches ● Headaches ● Chills ● Fatigue ● Runny Nose. Some people may also have nausea, diarrhea and vomiting, which associated mainly with the H1N1 “Swine” flu.
